Tennis star honored with Wheaties box

Fifty-one years after she broke the color barrier in tennis, Althea Gibson appears on the newest boxes of General Mills' Wheaties cereal.

But the reclusive star, a resident of East Orange, N.J., skipped a ceremony in Newark on Monday for the unveiling of the box design.

Gibson won five Grand Slam tournament titles, including Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958, after becoming the first black tennis player to be accepted in competition for the national championship in 1950.

Boxes with Gibson's likeness will begin appearing on store shelves in March.
