Texas legislator proposes arming school principals

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) — Pistol-packing principals would be the first line of defense against shootings in some Texas schools, a state legislator's aide said Friday.

State Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp, an advocate of the right to carry handguns, has proposed legislation that would let principals and school superintendents in rural districts arm themselves at school.

Principals from rural districts asked Hupp to propose the measure so they could protect students from incidents such as Monday's shooting at a high school in Santee, Calif., that left two dead, said Trey Blocker, Hupp's legislative director.
