3 boys arrested after car is taken, handgun waved

WEST VALLEY CITY — Police arrested three boys, 13, 15, 16, who took a car and waved a chrome handgun at people chasing them to recover the car.

South Salt Lake police spokesman Darrin Sweeten said a fourth boy remains at large.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday when a couple outside Sam's Club near 3300 South and 900 West turned around before entering the store and saw four teenage boys taking their car, Sweeten said.

The couple, who was shopping with another couple, hopped into their car and began chasing the boys, he said. During the pursuit, the boys waved a chrome handgun, Sweeten said.

The couple flagged down a West Valley police officer, who stopped the car. The boys jumped out and ran, but police were able to find three of them. They are in a juvenile detention center, Sweeten said.
