Board pulls license of Hyrum teacher

The State Board of Education has revoked the teaching license of a Cache County physical education teacher who has acknowledged having sex with a 17-year-old North Carolina girl he met in a religion-oriented Internet chat room.

Gordon Brent Bodily, 51, Hyrum, voluntarily surrendered his license in lieu of a hearing, according to the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.

Bodily met the girl in a chat room and lured her to fly from North Carolina to Salt Lake City to have sex with him, according to federal court documents.

Bodily pleaded guilty to enticement for illegal sexual activity, a federal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Prosecutors agreed to ask for minimum sentencing because he accepted responsibility for the affair. He agreed to receive sex offender therapy in prison.

Bodily is to be sentenced later this month before U.S. District Judge David Winder.

Bodily, who at the time of the offense was a bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, worked for 14 years at the South Cache Center teaching mainly physical education classes..
