Overdose treatments double at Cedar City ER

CEDAR CITY (AP) — The number of overdoses treated in Valley View Medical Center's emergency room nearly doubled between 1999 and 2000.

After treating 41 overdose victims in 1999, the emergency room handled 81 overdoses last year.

Dr. Kim Rowland, emergency department medical director at Valley View, said attempted suicides are the most common overdose cases at the center.

Fear of being arrested often prevents overdose victims from going to hospitals.
