Brigham Young prevails in WNIT opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Erin Thorn scored 21 points and Brigham Young made 11 of 16 three-pointers en route to a 78-63 victory over Oregon State in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Friday.

Brigham Young (19-12) advances to face Hawaii, which defeated Santa Clara 73-57 Thursday. Oregon State is eliminated.

Stacy Jensen added 19 points for the Cougars. Felicia Ragland led Oregon State (16-13) with 15 points while Ericka Cook added 14 and Hollye Holbrook 12.

A three-pointer by Thorn gave Brigham Young a 54-35 lead with 14 minutes remaining and the Beavers never got closer than 15 after that.

The Cougars also made 17 of 20 free throws and finished the game shooting 61 percent from the field.
