WINNIPEG, Manitoba — The Utah Grizzlies lost and won again Sunday.
After beating the Manitoba Moose by a goal Saturday at the E Center, the two teams reversed the outcome in Winnipeg Sunday night, with the Grizz losing 2-1 in a shootout. Since they made it to the extra session, they did pick up a critical point in the standings, though.
Neither team scored in the first five shootout rounds. Rusty Fitzgerald finally ended the extended game by beating Grizz goalie Mike Bales in round six.
Ken Wregget was the Moose's other hero. He stopped 30 shots in regulation and stymied the Grizz on their six shootout attempts.
Utah had a 2-1 lead early in the third period after goals by Brad Lauer and Jon Sim, who scored twice on Saturday. The Moose then forced the overtime on Brett Hauer's goal in the final stanza.
The Grizz are now 32-32-6 and trail the Chicago Wolves for the final playoff spot in the IHL Western Conference by three points. Manitoba (34-25-10, 78) overtook Houston for first place.
