He loves basketball and he's from Brooklyn. But in May, filmmaker Spike Lee will be writing about baseball for a new upscale Manhattan magazine.
Lee has been hired to write a sports column for Gotham. His debut effort will appear in the magazine's third issue and, according to Monday's Daily News, will contend that Babe Ruth was black.
Gotham editor Joseph Steuer says Lee is a good choice for his magazine. "He is a quintessential New Yorker," Steuer said. "I am trying to celebrate the whole city in its macro, and I mean everything. I don't see it as an Upper East Side magazine. I see it as a New York, uptown-downtown, what's happening around the city kind of magazine."
