Bruins keep hopes alive

Two teams on the outside of the playoff race worked overtime to keep their postseason hopes alive.

The Boston Bruins closed within two points of the eighth-place Carolina Hurricanes when Brian Rolston scored 2:49 into overtime in a 3-2 victory Thursday over the Montreal Canadiens.

"The win puts a little more heat on the Hurricanes," said Boston goalie Byron Dafoe, who made 15 saves.

Nashville's odds of reaching the playoffs are somewhat dimmer. Mark Eaton helped the Predators' chances by scoring 1:54 into the extra session, lifting Nashville over Chicago 2-1.

The 10th-place Predators must make up five points in six games and leap over Phoenix and Los Angeles to qualify for the postseason for the first time in their three-year history. In other NHL games, it was Detroit 4, Minnesota 2; Atlanta 2, Tampa Bay 0; Colorado 3, St. Louis 1; Calgary 3, Philadelphia 1; and Ottawa 2, San Jose 1.
