Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman has accepted a proposal to turn a fire station into a new substation for the sheriff's department once firefighters move into their new building this summer.

Currently, the department's south patrol works out of a trailer in the parking lot of Whitmore Library. The 2,600-square-foot fire station, 7480 S. 2700 East, will provide deputies with three times the space they have now, Sheriff Aaron Kennard said.

"The old building was not serving the public," he said.

Up to 35 deputies will be stationed at the substation. The department also plans to house its search and rescue equipment there so it's closer to the canyons. The search and rescue equipment is in a building near 700 West and 3900 South.
