WASHINGTON — To explain why he has missed most House votes the past couple of weeks, Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, said Thursday that his oldest daughter has been diagnosed with cancer.

Rachel Cannon, 21, a student at Brigham Young University, had surgery Wednesday that removed a malignant mass from her leg, said Jeff Hartley, Cannon's press secretary.

"She's recovering well. Future treatment is to be determined from analysis of the mass and working with doctors over the next few weeks," Hartley said.

Cannon missed all votes last week to be with his daughter after she was diagnosed. He was in Washington early this week but returned to Utah Tuesday after his daughter had a preliminary biopsy that day that led to the surgery.
