VINEYARD, Utah County — Two men were injured this week in separate accidents at Geneva Steel.

Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards said paramedics assisted a worker Wednesday who broke his left leg in several places after his clothing was caught in some machinery.

Aurelio Perez, 58, was taken to Timpanogos Hospital for medical treatment.

He was later flown by helicopter ambulance to University Hospital.

On Thursday, a 26-year-old man, who works for a private firefighting firm that contracts with the steel-making plant, suffered second-degree burns to his neck and face.

Paul Hough, regional vice president of Guard-Systems Inc., the company hired to work with Geneva Steel, said firefighter Jim Clark was injured when a burning pipe exploded.

Firefighters were attempting to extinguish a fire in the pipe, which apparently was ignited while a Geneva employee was working on it with a welding torch.

Clark was taken to University Hospital's burn unit by helicopter ambulance.

Clark was listed in serious but stable condition today; Perez was listed in serious condition.
