NEW YORK (Reuters) — Four suburban New York schools were closed Friday after authorities learned of a threat allegedly made against the schools over the Internet, police said.

A student alerted authorities at about 2 a.m. that someone in an Internet chat room had made an unspecified threat that something would happen Friday in one of the schools in Greenburgh, N.Y., police said.

A high school, middle school and two elementary schools were closed in the town's Edgemont district while police investigated, said Greenburgh Police Sgt. Richard Conroy.
