A man who went on a rampage while naked, stabbing three people, holding a knife to the throat of a 3-year-old child and vandalizing a car, received a suspended prison sentence Friday and was directed to get outpatient psychiatric care.
David Campbell, 34, was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison for each of two counts of attempted murder, a second-degree felony. However, 3rd District Judge Timothy Hanson suspended the sentence and put Campbell on probation for five years.
The judge ordered Campbell, who has been in jail or a psychiatric hospital since his April 10, 2000, arrest, to cooperate with whatever outpatient treatment plan is prepared for him by Valley Mental Health.
Hanson also directed that Campbell live with his parents, take prescribed medications for mental problems, refrain from consuming alcohol or other drugs, submit to urine tests, keep in contact with a counselor and wear an ankle monitor.
Prosecutor Paul Parker said that other charges of aggravated burglary, criminal mischief and two other counts of attempted murder were dropped.
A police report said Campbell and his brother were visiting a neighbor's home in Kearns last year when Campbell began disrobing.
When told to put his clothes back on, he ran out of the house naked, kicked and hit the windshield of a car until it broke, then broke into the house again by forcing a locked door, the report said.
Campbell grabbed a knife, stabbed his brother, stabbed the child's mother, stabbed another woman who was shielding the child, and then held a knife to the little girl's throat, put her on a kitchen counter and raised the knife as if to stab the child, according to police.
The girl's mother stepped between them and Campbell again stabbed her in the shoulder and the middle of her back, breaking the knife blade off, the report said.
Campbell was arrested after running out of the house and dashing wildly down the street. He was taken to a hospital to get treatment for injuries, including facial wounds incurred when he smashed his head into the windshield of the car he vandalized.
