OREM — A 21-year-old man was sitting at his computer Friday when armed police officers smashed through his front door and arrested him for investigation of possession of child pornography. Orem police Lt. Doug Edwards said a warrant to enter and search the condominium near 100 North and 300 West was obtained after receiving downloaded images on discs from an informant.
Edwards said police were told the images were from the man's computer. Police received the information about 4 p.m. Thursday, the lieutenant said.
Police entered the home at 1 p.m., and the man was arrested without incident, Edwards said.
Members of a SWAT team went to the home first because detectives were told the man owned several firearms and regularly answered the door with a loaded handgun if he did not expect company or did not know the visitor, he said.
"We worked within 24 hours," Edwards said. "That's how serious we take this."
Police searched the split-level condo for evidence for more than two hours. They took a computer and several guns.
Edwards said police do not know if the man distributed information police would consider to be pornographic. Detectives also are looking into whether the images were locally produced.
"In more than 20 years of experience as a police officer this is as egregious a case as I've seen involving kiddie porn," Edwards said.
The man has not been charged. He is being held at the Orem Jail.
