The Eurostar train between London and Paris covers 308 miles in about 4 1/2 hours, although it would be capable of making the trip in 3 hours under ideal conditions. Weekday schedules start at 5:15 a.m., and trains leave approximately every 40 minutes. The last train departs Waterloo station at 7:10 p.m. On weekends, trains run less frequently.

One-way fares range from $369 for first premium class and $279 for first class. Second class full fare is $199. Several other fares for children, seniors, the wheelchair-bound, leisure travelers, passholders and youths also are available.

Daytime rail service between Paris and Milan starts at 7:54 a.m. and arrives at 2:55 p.m. A second train leaves Paris at 10:54 a.m. and arrives at 5:55 p.m.

Fares are $188 for first class, $132 for second.

Trains from Milan to Rome run hourly (with a few exceptions) from 5:30 a.m. to 11:25 a.m. Average travel time: 4 1/2 hours.
