CHICAGO (AP) — A man was charged with child endangerment Monday after five children between the ages of 2 and 6 were killed in a residential fire.

Police spokesman Kevin Haley declined to identify the man but said he was believed to have been the father of four of the children.

Haley said the man was charged with five counts of child endangerment because he apparently left the children alone in the apartment.

The fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday in a two-story brick apartment building adjoining a church, said Fire Department Cmmdr. Tim Stokes.

Firefighters found the children in the living room and bedroom of the second-story residence. Three of the children were dead and two others died at a hospital, Stokes said. The names of the children were not released.
