Joel Nevin Richards, 84, passed away at his home March 22, 2001.
He was born Oct 29, 1916 in Cleveland, UT to Kate and Tom Richards. He married Virginia Pearson July 18, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He grad-uated from Weber College and re-ceived a BS and master's from the U of U, plus a year in vocational counseling at Columbia University. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. He served his country in Europe during World War II. He was a devoted member of the LDS Church. He served a mission in the North Central States where he was mission secretary. He was stake mission president in the North Jordan Stake and served in the bishopric of the East Millcreek 11th Ward. He was a gifted teacher of the gospel. He was also involved in scouting and had many fond memories of his youth fireside group in Ogden. He taught in the SLC school district and was a counselor at Bryant and Northwest Jr. High and South High Schools. He held leadership positions in the Salt Lake Teacher's Association and the Salt Lake Counselors Association.
Nevin was a deep thinker, a kind, gentle and Christ-like man. His family always came first and he is dearly loved by all who knew him. We will miss his cheerful, happy attitude and his songs and verse.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; eight children, Joel (Shirley Ann), Mark (Gouri), Jane (John) Wagner, Bruce (Rose), Jim (Kellie), Chris (Vernon) King, Bob (Cindy), Kate Richards; 22 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wed. March 28, 2001. 2 p.m. in the Valley View 11th Ward Chapel, 4032 S. 2300 E. Friends may call Tues. March 27, 2001, 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr and one hour prior at the church. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
