HEBER CITY — The search for a man presumed to have drowned in Jordanelle Reservoir resumed Monday.
The man was canoeing with a friend Sunday afternoon when a storm with winds up to 40 mph rolled through, causing the canoe to capsize, Jordanelle State Park assistant manager Tracy See said.
Two nearby kayakers spotted one of the men in the freezing water, hanging onto the canoe.
"I would have to say he owes it all to the kayakers," See said.
The man was taken to University Hospital by medical helicopter. When he left the water, his body temperature was 84 degrees, See said. The man was listed in fair condition Monday morning.
See said efforts to recover the body of the second man are being hampered because the lake is still partially frozen and many of the access roads are snow-covered.
See said it's too early for people to go out on the reservoir, regardless of their experience. "We can't launch emergency services because water temperatures are so cold."
