FRANCHISES FIGHT FOR MEMPHIS: Faster than you can say barbecue and Elvis, Memphis has gone from no NBA teams to having two franchises that have applied to move there.
After three decades of searching for big-time pro sports, the city learned it could be the new home of the Vancouver Grizzlies or Charlotte Hornets.
Each team said it would play in The Pyramid, a $65 million arena opened in 1991, until a new stadium costing up to $250 million could be built. The Pyramid seats 19,000 for basketball.
LAPPAS HIRED BY UMASS: Steve Lappas was hired as basketball coach at Massachusetts two days after he unexpectedly resigned at Villanova.
RHODE ISLAND HIRES COACH: Jim Baron, the former St. Bonaventure basketball coach with a reputation for rebuilding struggling teams, took over the Rhode Island program.
He replaced Jerry DeGregorio, who resigned after the season with a 12-48 record, the worst two-year stretch in school history.

UGA WINTERCHAMPS: Tad Hunt, a St. George native, who plays for Dixie College, hung on to win the UGA Winterchamps golf tournament Sunday at Coral Canyon Golf Course in St. George.
Hunt carded scores of 48 and 38 in the Stableford scoring system for a two-day total of 86. That was one better than Darrin Overson, who recently completed his collegiate career at Colorado State. Third place went to 17-year-old Daniel Summerhays, the reigning State Amateur champion.
Fifteen-year-old Rachel Newren ran away with the Women's Championship with scores of 34-34-68 to win by 10 points.
Claude Ryans had steady rounds of 41-40-81 to win the Senior Division. First round leader David Bradford, who had recorded a great opening round of 45, finished one shot behind after dropping off to a 35 the final day.
