A Logan couple has been sentenced to serve a combined 30 years in prison in connection with the drowning death of their 10-month-old daughter in August 1998.
Shane Smith, 28, and Joleen Smith, 24, were convicted of child-abuse homicide, a second-degree felony after a three-day jury trial in January.
On Aug. 1, 1998, Shane Smith flagged down a passing Logan police officer and said his daughter needed medical attention and had possibly drowned in the Smiths' bathtub. The baby was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. A subsequent autopsy revealed severe, deliberate injuries to the baby's head and spine, according to court documents.
