CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — An Israeli citizen was arrested after a Highway Patrol trooper found 147 pounds of ecstasy in his rental car. State law enforcement officials say it was the largest single seizure of the drug on U.S. highways.
The man was stopped for speeding on Interstate 80 about 10 miles east of Cheyenne last week. The trooper who searched the car found 135,000 ecstasy tablets, estimated to be worth from $1.3 million to $6 million, in duffel bags in the trunk, the state Division of Criminal Investigation said.
Atzon Gerby, 42, faced federal charges of possessing a controlled substance with intent to deliver and remained in the Laramie County jail on Tuesday. Investigators said Gerby was living in Tarzana, Calif., and was driving from the New York City area when he was arrested.
