MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A 72-year-old man who escaped from an Alabama prison four decades ago while serving time for stealing pigs was arrested after police responded to reports that he had been beaten in his Detroit home.
Police found Robert Clarence Cobb with a bloodied face in the home he shared with Loren Dale, 71, and her two children. Dale's son told police Cobb was wanted in Alabama, Detroit police spokesman Claude Fox said.
Cobb was convicted of grand larceny in 1954 for the thefts. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison but escaped in 1957. He worked in steel mills until he retired, Fox said.
"It's safe to say he has been a model citizen and he's worked here in the city for over 20 years," Fox said from Detroit.
Cobb was arrested Friday and charged with escape. Mobile District Attorney John M. Tyson Jr. said Tuesday he would look into the case.
Neither of Dale's children was charged in the beating, Fox said.
