McMILLAN EXTENDED: SuperSonics coach Nate McMillan got a four-year deal, a reward for restoring stability to the team after Paul Westphal was fired early this season.

Seattle has gone 33-25 in the tough Western Conference since McMillan took over in November, when the team was 6-9 and plagued by bickering among players and Westphal.

NEW VILLANOVA COACH: Jay Wright, who led Hofstra into the last two NCAA tournaments, was hired as coach at Villanova.

Wright was born in Philadelphia and was a Villanova assistant from 1987-92. He replaces Steve Lappas, who resigned Saturday to take the coaching job at Massachusetts.

Wright, who led the Pride to a 26-5 record and a second straight America East Conference title, takes over a Villanova program that has missed the NCAA tournament the past two years.

WOODEN ALL-AMERICANS: Shane Battier and Jason Williams of Duke and Casey Jacobsen and Jarron Collins of Stanford are among the 10 players selected to the John R. Wooden All-America team.

Others honored were Charlie Bell of Michigan State, Casey Calvary of Gonzaga, Joseph Forte of North Carolina, Troy Murphy of Notre Dame, Tayshaun Prince of Kentucky and Frank Williams of Illinois.

GARCIAPARRA IDLED: Nomar Garciaparra is likely to miss at least the first 2 1/2 months of the season — and possibly up to four months — because of an injured right wrist.

The Boston Red Sox shortstop said the probability of surgery is "extremely high." The two-time defending AL batting champion, who split a tendon in the wrist when he was hit by a pitch from Baltimore's Al Reyes in September 1999, is to meet with the team doctor.

INTERNET FEED FEES: Baseball fans will have to pay this season for Internet feeds of major league radio broadcasts.

The feeds, free since local stations began broadcasting on baseball Web sites, will now cost $9.95 for the season. The fee comes from baseball's partnership with Seattle-based RealNetworks Inc.

Major league baseball is guaranteed $20 million over three years.

The NBA already has a fee of $29.95 for similar service. Internet broadcasts on NFL games remain free.

As part of its agreement with baseball, RealNetworks also will offer subscribers the ability to search for and create customized video highlights.

FILLING AIKMAN'S SHOES: The Dallas Cowboys have found Troy Aikman's successor.

Free agent Tony Banks, who began last season as Baltimore's starting quarterback, agreed to a one-year deal with Dallas, the Cowboys announced on their Web site.

Banks will earn a base salary of about $500,000, fitting the Cowboys' needs of a starting quarterback at a low price. The deal also includes incentives that can increase its value.

In his five-year NFL career, Banks has started 61 games. Last season, he completed 150 of 274 passes (55 percent) for 1,578 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

COLLINS SENTENCED: Former Miami Dolphins running back Cecil Collins was sentenced to 15 years in prison less than two hours after a jury convicted him of sneaking through a neighbor's window to watch her sleep.

Collins was arrested in December 1999 on charges he broke into an apartment where Tina Nolte and her husband, Ron, were sleeping. They awoke to see him and recognized him as their neighbor.

When arrested later, Collins told police he only wanted to watch Tina as she slept.

ANDRETTI'S RETURN: Michael Andretti will return to the Indianapolis 500 for the first time since 1995, the year before formation of the Indy Racing League spawned a boycott of the event by most of the top teams and drivers in open-wheel racing.

Andretti, winner of a record 40 CART races, has never won the 500.
