HEBER CITY — Searchers began using sonar equipment and a robotic submarine Wednesday morning in efforts to find a man presumed drowned in the Jordanelle Reservoir over the weekend.

By late Wednesday morning, rescue workers still hadn't found the body, according to Tracy See, Jordanelle State Park assistant manager. Winds that had hampered the search in previous days died down Wednesday morning, making the search a little easier.

Christopher David Kugler, 27, was canoeing with a friend, Frank Craig, 29, Sunday when high winds, hail and sleet capsized their canoe about 3:30 p.m.

Neither Kugler nor Craig was wearing a life jacket, according to Jordanelle State Park officials.

Two women from the Park City area spotted Craig in the water as they returned to shore Sunday. The women put their kayaks back in the water and rescued Craig, but Kugler had already vanished.

Craig was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital. He was released late Tuesday morning.

Search and rescue crews from the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office and Jordanelle State Park have spent the past few days combing the area with underwater cameras.

The cold, deep, murky water has made it impossible for divers to search the lake, and stormy conditions on the surface have made it difficult to keep the underwater cameras steady.

"The winds have been really, really high so it's been really difficult with the cameras," See said. "Initially they were looking at an area that was probably a quarter mile wide but with the winds and the movement of the water they have moved it out."

As the weather warms up, algae is increasing in the water, adding to an already murky mix of sage and oak brush.
