Salt Lake County Councilman Winston A. Wilkinson has been named an Olympic trustee.
Wilkinson was appointed Wednesday by Gov. Mike Leavitt and Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson to represent the Utah Association of Counties on the Salt Lake Organizing Committee Board of Trustees.
An employee of Brigham Young University's development office, Wilkinson is an active member of the Republican Party. Last year, he was named alternate national delegate to the GOP national convention.
He served as special assistant to the U.S. Department of Education secretary during the Reagan administration and was later appointed deputy director of the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services civil rights division.
Wilkinson replaces Dennis Ewing of Tooele County. He resigned about a year ago after leaders of the counties association decided they wanted their representative on the board to be from a county with an Olympic venue.
Wilkinson's District 5 seat on the County Council includes Sandy, South and West Jordan and parts of Taylorsville.
