Utah Transit Authority is about to embark on a new program. For the first time in 20 years, UTA is offering Sunday service on select routes in Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties.
As a full-time rider of the bus since 1992, let me offer a suggestion to the Transit Authority that will make Sunday service more successful. First, let me remind the public that this service is the result of a sales tax increase that was approved by voters in all three counties. The Transit Authority has determined Sunday service will occur on "change date." Change date is tentatively scheduled for April 21, so Sunday bus service commences April 22.
My proposal is to remind businesses that bus service means more people are traveling, which results in more business, which should more than offset the loss of business due to the tax increase. I propose UTA pass out stickers that say "I rode the bus today!" The stickers, which would affix to clothing, would stand testament to the ride. And businesses would be aware of those customers who would not be shopping if it were not for the bus.
