Tie Domi is quite familiar with NHL penalty boxes. He did not take it lightly when a fan in Philadelphia invaded his space.
Domi wrestled with a spectator who fell over a glass partition into the penalty box after the Toronto enforcer incited other fans by squirting water at them during the Maple Leafs' 2-1 victory over the Flyers on Thursday night.
The fracas started after Domi was sent off for a penalty and twice squirted water on fans sitting in the front row. The fan, Chris Falcone, charged from the second row and threw a punch that didn't connect as he fell into the glass.
The pane broke and Falcone fell into the box as the two scuffled.
"Hey, that's old time hockey, it was perfect," said Domi, who once had a fight with a mascot in a penalty box back when he was a teenager in junior hockey.
"They threw stuff at me. Once was enough," Domi said. "After the second one, I told the guy in the penalty box that after one more I was going to squirt water. So I squirted water. I didn't plan on fighting anybody."
Less than a minute after the fight was broken up by linesman Kevin Collins and security, Toronto's Jonas Hoglund snapped a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal.
"We've had some disappointing outings in the last little while," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said. "So it was an important game for us both for our frame of mind as we approach playoffs and also we didn't have anything assured at this point."
The Leafs are in seventh place in the conference, seven points in front of Carolina and Boston — which are tied for the final playoff position.
Dan McGillis gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead 8:12 in, but Gary Roberts tied it 57 seconds into the second on a power play.
