Uniprise, a segment of UnitedHealth Group that handles claims processing, will close most of its Draper operation starting in June. But how many of the operation's 389 employees will lose their jobs is still being worked out.
Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group is the parent company of five different operations, including UnitedHealthcare, one of the two largest health insurance providers in Utah. A sister operation, Uniprise, based in Hartford, Conn., markets UnitedHealth Group's products to large companies — those with 5,000 or more employees. And it is responsible for all operations and administration functions for UnitedHealth Group, which means it runs all claims-processing operations and telephonic customer service operations.
The claims-paying operations located at 12557 S. Business Park Dr. in Draper will be "parceled out" to other service centers in various parts of the country, according to Stephen Gage, Uniprise vice president of marketing and communications.
What will happen to individual employees is still being sorted out, he said. The company already has a number of telecommuters working in the Utah area, processing claims from their homes. Some of the employees who work in the Draper office likely will be offered telecommuting positions, with the same jobs, but "they'll just stay home to do them," Gage said.
Some may be offered relocation to one of the regional sites that will take over the work from the center. The rest will be offered a severance package.
"We're not sure what the breakdown is there," Gage said. "We'll be working that out over the next several months."
The employees were told Thursday that their jobs were being moved out of the center.
The work will be phased out between June and September, Gage said.
Other UnitedHealthcare and Uniprise operations on the Wasatch Front will not be affected by the change, he said. The 42 Uniprise employees working in the Draper office who process claims for the railroad business won't be impacted, either.
