TOOELE — The city has closed its 51-year-old municipal pool after learning it needed up to $800,000 in repairs..

A structural engineer determined there were fractures in overhead steel beams in the basement. "That sent up a red flag," said Mayor Charlie Roberts. In even the smallest earthquake, he said, the building would not hold up.

"It's just unsafe, and it's not worth the risk," said Roberts.

Problems were also discovered with rusting galvanized pipe, a rotting wooden roof and a corroded surge tank. The pool was officially closed March 23.

More than 20 employees were given notice. Roberts will meet with mayors in the west part of the valley to seek temporary accommodations until a new facility is built in the next 14 to 18 months.
