Austin J. Erickson, 82, passed away Friday, March 2, 2001 in Bountiful from complications following surgery.
Austin was born in Spring City, UT, Aug. 19, 1918 to Austin Emil Erickson and Sarah Eva Allred. He married Norma Tuttle in the Manti LDS Temple March 22, 1941. They were happily married for 60 years. He grew up in Spring City and graduated from Snow College in Ephraim and then went to BYU where he graduated in Agronomy. He loved to play the saxophone and clarinet and played in dance orchestras. Austin was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life. He served in the Southern States Mission from 1938-40. He served faithfully in many positions in the church, including as bishop in the Logan, Utah 19th Ward. He and his loving companion, Norma served a mission in Birmingham, Alabama in 1984-85. He served as a temple worker in the Bountiful LDS Temple for three years. He was an avid genealogist.
He worked for the Soil and Water Conservation Service for 40 years where he had been Utah Assistant State Scientist. After retiring in 1982, he spent much of his time with his family, doing carpentry projects, working on his computers and traveling with his wife. His vegetable garden was always appreciated by family and friends. Dad and Mom were constant companions. His family was blessed by his love for them and his example as a father and husband.
Austin is survived by his wife, Norma; five children, Barry (Karla) Erickson, Myra (Larry) Hendricks, Dave (Bette Jo) Erickson, all of Bountiful, Gene (Pam) Erickson, West Jordan, Joyce (Steve) Denning, Logan; 27 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, sister, Elaine Martin, Sunnyside, WA; and in-laws, Wayne and Ruth Tuttle, Provo, Ellis Tuttle, Manti, Paul and Delma Dyreng, Gunnison, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Byron.
Services will be Tues. March 6, 2001 in the Mueller Park LDS 1st Ward chapel, 1825 S. 800 E, Bountiful, 12 noon. The family will receive friends and family at a viewing Mon. March 5, 6-8 p.m., Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St, Bountiful, and at the church Tues. 10-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Bountiful City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Austin requested donations be made to the LDS Church missionary fund.
