BASKETBALL: Utah State's Shawn Daniels was named a second team all-district selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Chevrolet Division I, it was announced Friday.
BASEBALL: Three homers helped BYU bat around in the seventh inning as pitcher Nate Fernley remained undefeated with a 21-0 victory Thursday afternoon over defending champion New Mexico in Albuquerque.
SWIMMING AND DIVING: Finishing No. 17 is good, but finishing No. 1 is better. The BYU men's swimming and diving team finished first in the nation among Division I programs with a 3.35 team grade-point average, according to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America academic rankings, while also ending the season ranked No.17 in dual-meet standings.
ACADEMICS: Weber State's soccer team was one of 33 Division I soccer teams with a team grade-point average of over 3.0 to receive a 2000 Women's College Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of American. The Wildcats placed 14th, tied with New Mexico, with a team grade-point average of 3.22.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Co-coaches Lynn Kofoed and Tom VudhiVadhana announced Friday, the signing of six new players to the soccer program for 2001. Signed from the local area were Becky Clark (Bonneville High) and Melanie Stratford (Layton High).
WOMEN'S TENNIS: The Wildcats defeated the University of Cincinnati 4-3 Friday at the Boise State Quizno's Classic in Boise, Idaho.
GOLF: The men's golf team will open its spring season Monday and Tuesday at the University of Portland's Pilots Spring Invitational in Portland, Ore. Twenty-seven holes will be played each day. Scores from the first round of 18 holes will be scored on Monday.
BASEBALL: The Wolverines routed the Grand Canyon JV 14-0 Thursday to put an end to an eight-game losing streak.
