CALGARY, Alberta — Canadian Catriona Le May Doan led three skaters under 38 seconds in the first leg of the women's 500-meter World Cup speedskating Saturday at Calgary's Olympic oval.
Le May Doan, the 1998 Olympic champion, was clocked in 37.42 seconds, just off her world record time of 37.40 seconds, set earlier this year. Russian Svetlana Zhurova was second in 37.79 seconds, just ahead of German Sabine Volker, who was third in 37.95.
It was the first time three skaters had ever finished under 38 seconds in women's World Cup competition.
The second leg is slated for Sunday.
