FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A federal jury convicted a man Wednesday in the 1982 kidnapping and shooting of two Drug Enforcement Administration agents in Colombia.
Rene Benitez was found guilty on five counts, including conspiracy to commit murder, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. An accomplice, Jose Ivan Duarte Acero, was previously convicted on the same counts.
DEA agents Kelly McCullough and Charles Martinez, who both survived the attack, were abducted from a hotel in Cartagena, Colombia, on Feb. 10, 1982, after four armed men posing as police forced their way into their room. The agents were in Colombia as part of an operation to stop shipments of marijuana to the United States.
