MEN'S TENNIS: After winning eight matches in a row, the BYU men's tennis team has now lost three of its last four, including a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the San Diego State Aztecs Friday afternoon in San Diego.

The Cougars lost all three of the doubles matches to lose the point.

BYU took on UNLV Saturday in San Diego to complete the three-match road swing.

BASEBALL: Add another BYU pitcher's name to the winning column as the Cougars defeated UNLV, 9-5, Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas.

Jeff Stone cracked the juggernaut of Nate Fernley and Ryan Adams, who have won the bulk of BYU's games. The junior lefty scattered eight hits and got eight strikeouts in his six innings against UNLV to record his first victory of the season. Stone's win was the 22nd in his Cougar career.

Tim Law hit the game-winning RBI in the third inning when he singled to left field as the first batter off 6-5 lefty reliever Ron Scheinbaum. That single drove in Tyler Perry from first base for BYU's sixth run. Law's second-inning double also scored Perry as he led all Cougars with three RBI. Law scored in the second inning off Hales' left field single.

The Cougars improved to 16-13 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain West Conference, and UNLV fell to 14-19 and 5-7. BYU starts a two-game series on Monday at Southern Utah University, which has a 5-21 record.

Those games will not be broadcast on the radio or the Internet.

SOFTBALL: After winning the first game of a doubleheader against New Mexico, 4-1, the BYU softball team lost the second game 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque.

In Game 1, the Lobos (28-15-1, 1-2-1) put their only run on the board when Krissy Keene doubled in Marianna Fenelli. BYU (20-16, 2-1) trailed 1-0 but finally got the bats going in the fourth inning. Freshman Oli Keohohou singled in Liz Smith, who had reached on an error, and then scored herself on a RBI single by Elizabeth Pierce-Boydston to put the Cougars up 2-1. In Game 2, New Mexico went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Tiffani Chambers doubled in Kelly Glass. BYU tied the game in the top of the third as Lindsey Hodgen-Kelly scored from second when Smith singled up the middle, but New Mexico took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth on a Keene solo home run. DeWitt-Wallentine was charged with the loss, pitching in relief, giving up two runs on one hit.

BYU's record moved to 20-16, 2-1 on the year. The Cougars will play two games each at UNLV Friday and at San Diego State Saturday. The first game of each series is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (MST).

Utah State

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Utah State's women's tennis team improved to 4-7 on the season with a 7-0 win over Southern Utah Saturday at the Sports Academy and Raquet Club in Logan.

The Aggies dominated every match with the Thunderbirds, winning all three doubles matches and all six of the singles matches in straight sets.

SOFTBALL: The Aggies dropped both games of its double-header against Long Beach State at the LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field Saturday. The Aggies were outscored 7-3 in the first game and shut out 5-0 in Game 2. USU is now 5-22 overall and 1-4 in Big West action. Long Beach State improved to 16-19 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in conference action.

Utah

WOMEN'S TENNIS: The Utes (4-9, 2-2 MWC) lost their second straight Mountain West Conference match, falling 6-1 to 60th-ranked UNLV (5-8) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

UNLV took two of three doubles matches to earn the point. Linn Ronnberg and Sheri Esrock won 9-8 at No. 3 over Urska Radanovic and Britta Gabl.

Frida Kareld was the lone singles win at No. 6. She beat Amy Hadziosmanovic, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. UNLV won the top five singles matches, all in straight sets but at No. 2.

Weber State

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Weber State's women's tennis team defeated Northern Arizona 5-2 today in its first home outdoor match of the season. The Wildcats won the doubles point 2-1 and won three singles matches in straight set. The No. 5 singles match went three sets and was won by WSU's Veronica Reynosa over NAU's Kathy Kmiec 1-6,6-4,6-2.

The Wildcats are now 7-3 on the season.

Southern Utah

BASEBALL: SUU's baseball team completed a sweep of its four-game Mid-Continent Conference-opening series against Chicago State by taking both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Cedar City. The T-Birds pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs, to win the opener, 11-4, and rallied with a four-run sixth inning to take the finale, 6-3.

UVSC

SOFTBALL: Utah Valley State College used another final-inning rally to sweep Snow College 8-3 and 5-3 Saturday in Ephraim and remain tied atop the SWAC women's softball standings with Salt Lake.

Just as they did in the first game of Friday's sweep, the Wolverines scored three runs in the final inning to grab a win Saturday. This time the rally came in the second game, as Camille Chivers and April Mangum delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles to wipe out a 3-2 Snow lead. Natalie Stevens drove home an insurance run on a ground-out to the right side. Haley Larsen went the distance on the rubber for UVSC, improving to 11-4 on the year.

In the first game UVSC jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, getting three in the first and two in the second. Mangum tripled in a run in the first. Chivers had a sac fly, and Larsen added an RBI double. In the second, Crystal Parry had an RBI single, and Chivers again had a sac fly. Janelle Sotelo doubled home another run in the fifth, and Weight had a two-run triple in the seventh. Shannon Lewis threw five innings to get the win.

On the day, Weight had six hits. Mangum and Belinda Renzello and four hits apiece. Chivers and Parry had three each.

UVSC improved to 9-3 in the SWAC and 20-13 overall. Salt Lake is also 9-3 in the league after sweeping a four game set from Dixie State over the weekend. Snow dropped to 6-6 and 19-14. UVSC plays a non-league twin-bill at home Tuesday against Weber State.
