The Humane Society of Utah is offering special, reduced-cost heartworm testing for dogs from April 3 through April 30.
For $12 per canine — half the usual cost — dog owners can have their pets tested at the society's clinic, 4242 S. 300 West, Murray. No appointment is necessary, and the clinic will be open Tuesdays through Fridays from 1-4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon.
Heartworm is one of the most deadly parasites that can affect dogs and if left untreated can cause extreme suffering and eventually death. The parasite was almost unheard of until a few years ago in Utah, but it is transmitted by mosquito bites and has now rapidly spread to nearly every part of the state.
Heartworm is difficult and expensive to treat but is easily preventable by giving dogs monthly chewable tablets.
