A rural residential area just off U.S. 6 will be considered for a zone change to allow shopping centers, apartments or condominiums.

The City Council plans to hold a public hearing on Tuesday regarding the controversial zone. The change would allow another road to be built in the east bench area, which is developing with hundreds of new homes. By rezoning the area for a shopping center, city officials say developers, rather than the city, would build the new road. The 65.44 acres are at about 500 South between 2000 East and 2550 East. Many of the residents have told officials in earlier meetings that they don't want a shopping center in their neighborhood.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 40 S. Main.
