If you want to light up someone's life by nominating them for the Olympic Torch relay, the days are dwindling to a precious few.
"We've had a tremendous response, but it's not too late to send in the names of inspirational people who fit the Olympic theme, 'Light the Fire Within,' " said Caroline Shaw, Salt Lake Organizing Committee spokeswoman.
Entries must be postmarked or logged online no later than Monday, April 30.
Applications may be picked up at any of the 4,300 Chevrolet dealerships nationwide or participating Coca Cola retail locations, such as Smith's Food & Drug Centers and Albertson's. Or persons may be nominated on the SLOC Web site, www.saltlake2002.com, or the Web sites of Coke and Chevy, the two major torch sponsors, www.cocacola.com and www.chevy.com.
SLOC announced on Monday it had received 17,200 nominations.
The nominating theme for the Salt Lake Winter Games is "community heroes."
Roughly 900 people will be picked to run one of the 0.2-mile legs on the torch's five-day journey through Utah, beginning Feb. 4, 2002, in Moab. The relay will end Feb. 8 when the torch is carried into Rice-Eccles Stadium for the opening ceremonies.
Runners must pay for their transportation to and lodging at the sites where they're picked to carry the torch, whether in Utah or elsewhere.
Torchbearers will be announced in August or September.
