Marcia Adams, the host of PBS cooking shows who recently wrote a book about her struggle with heart disease, is recovering from a heart transplant.
The 65-year-old Adams, who had been awaiting a new heart since February 2000, was listed in fair condition Monday in a Fort Wayne, Ind., hospital.
Adams had been plagued for years by a condition that severely restricts the heart's pumping efficiency. Two weeks ago, her condition began worsening, said her husband, Dick.
"I could see it gradually coming on. She was feeling worse," he said.
On Thursday night, the couple received a telephone call informing them a donor heart was available. Adams underwent the transplant early Friday.
She is expected to remain hospitalized for seven to 10 days.
The Fort Wayne resident, who is the author of six cookbooks, is a food historian who specializes in antique recipes. Earlier this year, she published "Marcia Adams: Heart to Heart", her chronicle of living with heart disease.
The book also offers medical information and recipes.
