Salt Lake City ranks 15th among U.S. cities in Internet penetration, according to statistics released Tuesday by Nielsen//NetRatings.

The rankings indicated that 58.7 percent of Salt Lake homes had Internet service.

Portland, Ore., was the most-wired city in the United States, with 69.7 percent penetration. Other cities ahead of Salt Lake City were Seattle; San Francisco; Boston; San Diego; Washington, D.C.; Denver; Orlando; Hartford/New Haven; Kansas City; Atlanta; St. Louis; Sacramento and Dallas.

Twenty markets were measured last year for Internet penetration. Among that group, Philadelphia had the largest year-over-year increase in penetration, with 40 percent growth. Statistics from a year ago were unavailable for Salt Lake City.

Last year, only six regions in the top 25 had penetration of 50 percent or better, but this year all 25 did.
