Shapiro Luggage & Gifts, an 83-year-old Salt Lake retailer, has been given the first-ever TGA Award for outstanding service to the travel goods industry by the New York-based Travel Goods Association.
An awards luncheon in the Shapiro family's honor was held recently in Orlando, Fla., at the International Travelgoods, Leather & Accessories Show.
The Shapiro family was honored based on its three generations of service to the industry and its "extraordinary family commitment as volunteers in community service."
Founded by Simon Shapiro in 1917, Shapiro Luggage & Gifts began as a manufacturer and supplier of custom-made automobile trunks. As car designs changed to incorporate built-in trunks, the Shapiros were faced with a disappearing market, so the family moved into luggage and leather goods.
