Police detained a man who is believed to have robbed a child-care center with a knife Monday.

The man entered Small World child-care center, 653 E. Simpson Ave. (2440 South) about 5:15 p.m., brandished a knife and demanded money from the attendant, Salt Lake Police Lt. Jim Jensen said.

The man fled the scene, making away with cash and checks in a grey car, Jensen said, but crashed his car into another vehicle near 300 E. Wentworth Ave. (2250 South.)

The man allegedly fled on foot from the accident and South Salt Lake police began to follow him — believing they were chasing a hit-and-run suspect.

"When they caught the guy, they put two and two together and figured out who he was," Jensen said.
