TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Federal and state government attorneys filed a lawsuit against a chemical company over an acid spill in the Alafia River more than three years ago.

The lawsuit accused Mulberry Phosphates Inc. of spilling 50 million gallons of acidic water in the river, killing fish and causing environmental damage along a 35-mile stretch of the river near Tampa. The suit asked a judge to hold the company liable for costs associated with the spill.

Officials decided to file the lawsuit Tuesday because a three-year statute of limitations was set to expire in May, said Ann Hurley, a U.S. Justice Department lawyer.
