Jay L. Nelson, 88, passed away from natural causes on June 26, 2001 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Born October 10, 1912 in Brigham City, Utah to Carl F. and Louesa K. Nelson. Graduated from Brigham Young University in 1936. Married Afton May Hansen on June 2, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple. She passed away September 30, 1981. Jay later married Roslyn Peterson on January 1, 1983.

Served as President of the Utah Technical College (predecessor of the Salt Lake Community College) from 1949 to 1978. Served in World War II. Retired after 28 years of military service as Lt. Colonel from the Army Reserves.

Active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survived by wife Roslyn and four children: Jerald (Zeta) of Sandy, Utah; Craig (Beverly) of Alta Loma, California; Bruce (Jody) of Murray, Utah; and Linda (Richard) Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah. Also survived by 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Viewing to be held at the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery on Friday, June 29, 2001 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral at 12 o'clock noon on Saturday, June 30th at the LDS Little Cottonwood 16th Ward, 6350 S. Rodeo Lane (1540 E.), Salt Lake City. Interment in the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Jay L. and Afton H. Nelson Scholarship fund at Salt Lake Community College (contact LouAnn Olsen at 957-4281).
