MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — A woman accused of arranging the kidnapping of her own son has been sentenced to four years in prison for child abuse.
Rajvinder Kaur, 42, agreed to a plea deal Friday for her role in the Aug. 8, 2000, kidnapping plot that sought $200,000 ransom from her husband.
Prosecutors said Kaur wanted the money to cover at least $100,000 in debts she owed in her native India.
The bungled attempt ended when her 5-year-old son was found unharmed at a Costco store in Oxnard.
Kaur and three men, who worked at her husband's Indian restaurant, had been charged with kidnapping for ransom and child abuse. Each received four-year prison terms under a plea agreement.
The boy was abducted from his home by two armed men in masks who tied up the parents and left a ransom note.
Over the next 19 hours the suspects made several calls, but investigators persuaded them to release the child.
