ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Mail-Well Inc., the largest maker of envelopes, received an order from the U.S. Treasury Department to produce more than 47 million envelopes that will be used to mail tax rebate checks to taxpayers.
Terms weren't disclosed. An order for at least 16 million more envelopes is expected soon, the company said.
Mail-Well's plants in Chicago and Cleveland have delivered more than 23 million of the envelopes, with the remainder to be delivered on various dates through September. Mail-Well expects to deliver all on time or ahead of schedule.
The Internal Revenue Service is scheduled to mail the first rebate checks for arrival during the week of July 23, Mail-Well said. The mailings will continue through September, according to a schedule linked to the last two digits of taxpayers' Social Security numbers.
