PROVO — Someday, ideally next season, the Utah Blitzz hope to vault from their current Division 3 league into the more competitive A-League.
With a win over Portland earlier this year, Utah proved it can compete with the higher-level teams. Whether that victory was a fluke will probably be answered Saturday night. Utah, winners of its first four games, hosts the A-League's Seattle Sounders at BYU in a U.S. Open Cup qualifier. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.
Utah enters the match following 5-0 and 6-0 victories over Northern Nevada last weekend. Blitzz newcomer Fadi Afash netted hat tricks in each game. Blitzz coach Chris Agnello knows a similar scoring frenzy against the Sounders isn't likely.
Whether or not Utah improves to 2-0 in Open Cup qualifying will likely be determined on the defensive end. Starting fullbacks Damien Munoz and Rob Karas are both nursing injuries and aren't expected to play.
Athanasios Kouboras, a 25-year-old defender, will help pick up the slack. The Blitzz just signed the defender to replace Gabriel Castro, who transferred to Arizona.
