A Deseret News photographer earned "best of show" recognition, another was named "Photographer of the Year," and two others received high honors in the Utah News Photographers Association Photojournalism competition.
Jeffrey D. Allred, Chuck Wing, Ravell Call and Jason Olson all won multiple honors, earning 14 of the 44 total recognitions given.
Allred captured the "best of show" award for his photographic essay about Carmelite nuns in Salt Lake City. His photo essay of a Russian orphanage placed second in the photo essay category, and another photo placed fourth in the sports action division. Allred also placed first in the sports feature division.
Wing and Call were ranked first and second as photographers of the year, as judged by a panel. Wing also finished fourth in the sports feature division for his "Quieting his player" photo.
Call excelled in the 2000 Olympics category, taking second, third and fourth places with his images from Sydney, Australia. He also was third in the spot news category for his Roy flood photographs.
Olson finished third and fourth in the general news division and fourth in the portrait division.
A total of 22 photographers from five newspapers submitted 385 entries in the contest. Judges were photographers from outside Utah who are experts in their categories.
