SPANISH FORK — When Canyon Elementary school children start back to classes this fall, they will have a safer way to get there.
The City Council on Tuesday awarded an $115,278 contract to K&P, a construction company, to build new sidewalks along Canyon Road. The new walks will "fill in the gaps" along that thoroughfare, said Richard Nielson, assistant city engineer.
The Utah Department of Transportation is scheduled to install curb and gutter and landscaping along Canyon Road next spring, Nielson said.
"I've been waiting for this for a long time," Mayor Dale Barney said. "Kids in that area haven't any place to walk."
Canyon Elementary is in the growing east bench area just west of Canyon Road. K&P submitted the low bid while the highest was $187,516. The city estimate for the project was $132,060.
