PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A woman who told funeral home workers she strangled her 20-month-old daughter with a shoestring was arraigned Thursday on murder charges.

Sharon Yvonne Weston had lost custody of her daughter, and on the day of the child's death the mother and daughter were visiting in a park under the supervision of a state caseworker.

Police said Weston slipped away, killed her daughter, wheeled her body in a stroller to a nearby funeral home and said she killed her.

"She said she had strangled her with a shoelace, and told us 'I wanted her out of pain,' " said Pam Cahill, a secretary at the funeral home.
